Cinnamon Sugar French Toast: A Deliciously Sweet Breakfast Recipe

May 6, 2025 by kitchenyumm

Cinnamon Sugar French Toast is a delightful breakfast treat that brings warmth and comfort to any morning. As I prepare this dish, I can’t help but think about its rich history, which dates back to ancient times when people would soak stale bread in milk and eggs to avoid waste. Over the years, this humble recipe has evolved into the sweet, indulgent version we know and love today. The combination of crispy, golden-brown bread dusted with a heavenly blend of cinnamon and sugar creates a flavor profile that is simply irresistible.

People adore Cinnamon Sugar French Toast not only for its delicious taste but also for its delightful texture—crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It’s a convenient dish that can be whipped up in no time, making it perfect for busy mornings or leisurely weekend brunches. Whether you’re serving it to family or enjoying it solo, this recipe is sure to bring a smile to your face and warmth to your heart.

Cinnamon Sugar French Toast this Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 8 slices of thick bread (like brioche or challah)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for the cinnamon sugar)
  • Maple syrup (for serving)
  • Fresh fruit (optional, for serving)

Preparing the Batter

1. In a large mixing bowl, crack the 4 large eggs. I like to use a whisk for this part, as it helps to break up the yolks and combine everything smoothly. 2. Pour in 1 cup of whole milk. The creaminess of whole milk really enhances the flavor and texture of the French toast. 3. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. This will give your French toast a lovely aroma and depth of flavor. 4. Sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. The cinnamon adds warmth, while the salt balances the sweetness. 5. Whisk everything together until it’s well combined and slightly frothy. You want to make sure there are no clumps of egg or cinnamon.

Preparing the Cinnamon Sugar

6. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup of granulated sugar with 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon. Mix it well with a fork or a small whisk until it’s evenly blended. This will be the sweet topping for your French toast.

Soaking the Bread

7. Take your 8 slices of thick bread and dip each slice into the egg mixture. Make sure to coat both sides well, allowing the bread to soak up some of that delicious batter. I usually let it sit for about 10-15 seconds on each side. 8. Place the soaked bread slices on a plate or a baking sheet. This will make it easier to transfer them to the skillet later.

Cooking the French Toast

9. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter and let it melt, swirling it around to coat the surface of the pan. 10. Once the butter is melted and bubbling, carefully place the soaked bread slices onto the skillet. I usually fit about 3-4 slices at a time, depending on the size of my skillet. 11. Cook the bread for about 3-4 minutes on one side, or until it’s golden brown. You can gently lift a corner of the bread with a spatula to check the color. 12. Flip the slices over and cook for another 3-4 minutes on the other side. You want both sides to be beautifully golden and slightly crispy. 13. Once cooked, transfer the French toast to a plate and repeat the process with the remaining slices, adding more butter to the skillet as needed.

Coating with Cinnamon Sugar

14. While the French toast is still warm, sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture generously over the top of each slice. I like to do this while they’re on the plate, but you can also do it in the skillet if you prefer. 15. Make sure to coat both sides if you like a little extra sweetness. The warmth of the toast will help the sugar stick nicely.

Serving Suggestions

16. Serve the cinnamon sugar French toast warm, drizzled with maple syrup. I love to pour a good amount of syrup over the top, letting it soak into the bread. 17. For an extra touch, add fresh fruit on the side. Sliced strawberries, bananas, or blueberries work wonderfully and add a refreshing contrast to the sweetness. 18. If you’re feeling indulgent, a dollop of whipped cream or a sprinkle of powdered sugar can elevate your French toast to a whole new level.

Tips for Perfect French Toast

19. Use day-old bread if possible. Stale bread absorbs the egg mixture better without falling apart, resulting in a sturdier French toast. 20. Don’t rush the cooking process. Cooking on medium heat allows the inside to cook through without burning the outside. 21. Experiment with different types of bread. Brioche and challah are my favorites, but sourdough or even whole grain can add unique flavors. 22. If you want to make this dish ahead of time, you can prepare the batter and soak the bread the night before. Just cover it and refrigerate, then cook in the
