Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground chicken
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup marinara sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the finely chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until translucent and fragrant.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
- Add the ground chicken, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until no longer pink and fully cooked.
- Season with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning, stirring well to combine.
- Pour in the marinara sauce and stir until the chicken is evenly coated. Simmer for about 5 minutes, adding a splash of water or chicken broth if needed for consistency.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Slice the hamburger buns in half and place them cut side up on a baking sheet. Toast in the oven for about 5 minutes if desired.
- Remove the chicken mixture from heat. Scoop a generous amount onto the bottom half of each toasted bun.
- Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the chicken mixture, followed by grated Parmesan cheese.
- Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for a minute before serving.
- Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
- Serve warm with your favorite side dishes like salad, fries, or potato chips.
Notes
- For added heat, mix in red pepper flakes or hot sauce to the chicken mixture.
- Substitute ground turkey for a healthier option.
- Experiment with different cheeses like provolone or a blend of Italian cheeses.
- Leftover chicken mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat before serving.
