Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large apples (preferably Granny Smith)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup buttermilk (or regular milk with a splash of vinegar)
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
- 1–2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
- Optional: additional cinnamon for sprinkling
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Wash and peel the apples using a vegetable peeler.
- Core and chop the apples into small, bite-sized pieces (about 1/4-inch cubes).
- (Optional) Toss the chopped apples with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a teaspoon of sugar for added flavor.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, ground cinnamon, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter (ensure the butter isn’t too hot).
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently fold together with a spatula, being careful not to overmix.
- Fold in the chopped apples until just combined.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Drop heaping tablespoons of the batter onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each fritter.
- (Optional) Sprinkle a little extra cinnamon on top of each fritter.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of milk, whisking until smooth. Adjust consistency with more milk if needed.
- Let the fritters cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
- Drizzle the glaze over the warm fritters or dip the tops directly into the glaze for a thicker coating.
- Drizzle any leftover glaze over the fritters and sprinkle with extra cinnamon if desired.
- Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving.
- Serve warm, either on their own or with a side of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, consider using brown sugar instead of granulated sugar.
- These fritters are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a couple of days.
